The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunderIsaiah 9:2-3
This is Isaiah’s prophecy of Jesus being born and saving us all from our sins – now and forever! Giving the people HOPE that the light (Jesus) will be seen and SHINE on the people of the land in times to come. Not just in this life but in heaven. ‘The people’ at this time were living in great darkness because they had lost their connection with God; hearts of unbelief, blinded by their own ignorant ways and judged after death (the sad birth-right of all humanity at the time). God is giving the people HOPE in a world of darkness
Verse 3 states the people will rejoice like they do at harvest. This is the time when the hard work has paid off and there is great reward. And in Matthew 4 13-14 Jesus went to Capernaum to fulfill what was said through Isaiah. Jesus said “On those living in the land of the shadow of death… a light has dawned.” This is evidence of a fulfilled prophecy. These verses give HOPE to us.
So even in the darkness that was created through human own doing… God was promising LIGHT the light of Jesus to come to them and shine on them. And he did! Giving us all the chance to live with Jesus forever.
This still applies today!
Darkness is all around us… the virus, money trouble, day to day stress, family worries. Everyday we can accept and re accept the light of Jesus and allow him to shine in our lives. The darkness in this world is real, the darkness in our personal lives and thoughts are real, however, 1 John 5 reminds us “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The darkness may or may not fade but God’s light in our lives can shine brighter. Now this light Isaiah prophesied was to be so pure and vast that it would be able to be seen by not only the people at this time, but every soul that saw life – before Jesus’ birth and every soul after. And it’s our choice to have hope in this light, to accept it and let it shine on us.
The light that will never go out, we have eternity with our Lord. THAT is his promise.
The ‘daily share’ is a hint each day for how you could share some hope in your life, today.
Do you have darkness in your life? Will you allow Jesus to shine on you? Do you have hope and trust in heaven? Why not think about making that choice today?
